From grade 5 towards seniors 700 points tournament

Our regulars probably still remember the first edition of the Amsterdam Senior International Open in Nieuw-Vennep. Shortly before the start of the tournament there were still a lot of challenges: which location, who are going to participate, how can we schedule the matches best? Essential elements for a successful week!

The Amsterdam Senior International Open began as an grade 5 tournament. Within a few years we reached a grade 2 status, which we were very proud of. Grade was even more of a challenge and we hope to show we have earned it. Rogier Liefbroer and Rob Menko have been in the organization from the beginning. They have been supported by Paulien van den Tempel, who is responsible for the PR of the tournament and brings in many players every year, together with Wilhelmina Baks. Later, the team was expanded with Miriam de Groot and Frank van Herpen. In 2021 Wijnand van Leeuwen joined the team.

In 2022 Rogier, Miriam and Frank decided to find other challenges. John Vievermans and Torsten Juechter, who had already experience with the Venlo tournament, replaced them.

From 2022 on, John, Torsten, Wijnand, Paulien and Wilhelmina hope to continue the tournament in the same spirit.

Unfortunately, due to construction work at the location of our tournament we had to cancel our 2018 edition. But we came back stronger as a grade 1 tournament in 2019 at a completely renovated national tennis center. Covid made us cancel 2020, but in 2021 we risked another edition, with a very satisfying result. 2022 saw again a good attendance with participants from 21 countries. Meanwhile we had achieved the 700 point status.

Our tournament is known for its great atmosphere, beautiful venue and strong competition. And this is how we want it to be! We continue to strive for the ideal mix of top tennis and socializing. Besides the matches we will organize a great Players Dinner, and – upon request –  a nice sightseeing trip for our contestants from abroad.

Will we see you at this years’ edition?

what people say about us

I played in the 75 + events in the Amsterdam Open in 2023. It was a really fun and friendly week! My husband and I stayed in a hotel about 100 metres from the courts and ate our evening meals at the club. The clay courts were in super condition and the organisation was superb. The order of play was posted in good time each day. There are also indoor courts so if the weather decides to be unkind nothing gets cancelled, and play continues under cover. We particularly appreciated the good bus service as we had the chance to explore the centre of Amsterdam which has so many museums and fascinating walks. I definitely recommend playing in the Amsterdam Open!

There are many reasons why I like to play the Amsterdam Open in Amstelveen. I have visited ASIO five times now and each and every time I had the best of fun. We had interesting matches and the people were very friendly. There are not many places where I can still compete in my own age group. Moreover, everybody speaks English, whereas I speak nothing but English.
